How to Make Onion Sambar at Home
Ingredients
- ½ cup toor dal
- 10–12 small shallots (sambar onions), peeled
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 tbsp tamarind pulp
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- ½ tsp fenugreek seeds
- ¼ tsp Prayosha Meera Hing Powder
- ¼ tsp Prayosha Meera Turmeric Powder
- 2 tsp Prayosha Meera Sambar Masala Powder
- 8–10 curry leaves
- Salt to taste
Step by Step Guide
- Cook ½ cup toor dal with ¼ tsp Prayosha Meera Turmeric Powder until soft, then mash lightly.
- In a pan, heat 2 tbsp oil and sauté the whole shallots until slightly golden and softened.
- Add the chopped tomato, 1 tbsp tamarind pulp, and enough water to cover. Simmer until the shallots are fully cooked.
- Stir in the mashed dal, 2 tsp Prayosha Meera Sambar Masala Powder, and salt to taste. Simmer for 8 more minutes.
- In a small pan, crackle 1 tsp mustard seeds, ½ tsp fenugreek seeds, ¼ tsp Prayosha Meera Hing Powder, and curry leaves in a little oil, then pour over the sambar. Serve hot with rice.
