How to Make Drumstick Sambar (Murungakkai Sambar) at Home
Ingredients
- ½ cup toor dal
- 2 drumsticks, cut into 2-inch pieces
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 tbsp tamarind pulp
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- ¼ tsp Prayosha Meera Hing Powder
- ¼ tsp Prayosha Meera Turmeric Powder
- 2½ tsp Prayosha Meera Sambar Masala Powder
- 8–10 curry leaves
- Salt to taste
Step by Step Guide
- Cook ½ cup toor dal with ¼ tsp Prayosha Meera Turmeric Powder until soft and mash it well.
- In a separate pot, boil the drumstick pieces with the sliced onion, chopped tomato, and 1 tbsp tamarind pulp until the drumsticks turn tender.
- Add the mashed dal, 2½ tsp Prayosha Meera Sambar Masala Powder, and salt to taste. Let the sambar simmer for 10 minutes so the drumstick flavor infuses well.
- Heat 2 tbsp oil in a small pan, add 1 tsp mustard seeds, ¼ tsp Prayosha Meera Hing Powder, and curry leaves. Let them crackle for a few seconds.
- Pour the tempering over the sambar, mix, and serve hot with rice, dosa, or vada.
